Texas Tech University was founded in 1923 as Texas Technological College. The college was established to provide instruction in the areas of agriculture, engineering, and home economics. The first building on campus was the Administration Building, which is still standing today. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Texas Tech experienced significant growth in enrollment and facilities. By 1936 the school had become a four-year university with an enrollment of over 2,500 students. During World War II, Texas Tech played a major role in training pilots for the US military. When the war ended, Texas Tech continued to grow as a university and by 1960 had an enrollment of over 10,000 students.

In 1965 Texas Tech changed its name to Texas Tech University and began offering graduate degrees for the first time. As part of this expansion, new schools such as the College of Arts & Sciences were established along with new research centers like the National Wind Institute.
