It was the first university in the state to offer upper-level courses and began offering four-year degrees in 1975. Initially, the university offered only junior and senior level courses, but soon expanded to offer a full range of degree programs. In 1994, the university was reorganized as an independent institution, separate from Texas A&M University. In 2000, it joined the Texas State University System, becoming an accredited four-year public university.
