Texas A&M University at Kingsville (TAMUK) was founded in 1925 as the South Texas Normal College and School of Military Aeronautics. The school was established to provide higher education for the citizens of South Texas, and to train pilots for the U.S. military. In 1929, it became a part of the Texas A&M System, and its name was changed to Texas College of Arts and Industries (TCAI). The college offered courses in agriculture, industrial arts, education, business administration and science.
In 1935, TCAI was reorganized as a four-year college and renamed Texas A&I University. During this period, the university experienced rapid growth in enrollment and faculty size due to increased demand for higher education in South Texas. The university also expanded its curriculum to include graduate programs in a variety of disciplines.
In 1989, the university changed its name once again to reflect its expansion into graduate studies; it became known as the University of Texas-Kingsville (UTK). UTK continued to experience growth over the next decade with new buildings being constructed on campus and an increase in enrollment numbers. In 2009, UTK returned to its roots as a part of the larger Texas A&M System when it was renamed Texas A&M University at Kingsville (TAMUK). Today TAMUK is home to more than 8,000 students from all over the world who are pursuing degrees in fields such as engineering, agriculture sciences, business administration, education and liberal arts.
