Texas A&M University at College Station began as a small agricultural and mechanical college in 1876. It was established by the Texas Legislature as the state’s first public institution of higher education. The original name of the school was the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, and it was established to provide educational opportunities for students interested in agriculture, engineering, and military science. In 1963, the school’s name was changed to Texas A&M University to reflect its growth beyond its original mission.
