Tennessee State University (TSU) was founded in 1912 as the Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, it was the first state-funded historically black college and university in the state. It has gone through several name changes since its founding, including Tennessee A&I State College, and finally Tennessee State University in 1979. TSU has grown to become one of the largest universities in the nation with over 8,000 students enrolled and more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered.
Throughout its history, TSU has been dedicated to providing access to higher education for African Americans and other minorities. In addition to being a leader in higher education for African Americans, TSU also played a major role in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. As part of this effort, many prominent civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks spoke at rallies on campus or addressed student groups at TSU. In addition to its civil rights activism, TSU also played an important role in developing new technologies that would benefit all citizens regardless of race or ethnicity.
