Temple University was founded in 1884 by Dr. Russell Conwell and started as a night school to serve the working class of Philadelphia. Initially, the school was called The Temple College of Philadelphia and offered one course in business law. Over the next few decades, Temple grew rapidly and began to offer a variety of courses and degree programs. By 1907, it had become an accredited 4-year university and changed its name to Temple University. In 1922, Temple moved its campus from North Broad Street to its current location in North Broad Street Park, which is now known as Main Campus. During this time, the university also established several of its most iconic landmarks, such as Mitten Hall and Sullivan Hall.
Throughout the 20th century, Temple continued to expand in both size and scope until it became one of the largest universities in Pennsylvania. In 1941, it opened its first graduate school; by 1975, there were nine different colleges offering more than 500 degree programs for students at all levels of education. Today, Temple is ranked among the top universities in the United States with over 39,000 students enrolled across 17 schools and colleges. It is also home to some of the most prestigious programs in fields such as business, law, medicine, engineering and architecture.
