Talladega College was founded in 1867 by former slaves and their free black allies. It was the first private historically black college in Alabama. The college was established at the urging of two former slaves, William Savery and Thomas Tarrant, who wanted to provide educational opportunities to African Americans in the post-Civil War South. The college’s first president was William J. Edwards, a former slave from Virginia who had been educated at Oberlin College in Ohio. Edwards’ leadership helped Talladega College grow and become a beacon of hope for African Americans seeking higher education during the Reconstruction Era. In its early years, Talladega College served as a place for African American teachers to be trained and certified to teach in segregated public schools. It also provided educational opportunities for those wishing to pursue professional careers such as medicine, law, and ministry. Today, Talladega College is an accredited four-year liberal arts institution with an enrollment of over 700 students from all over the country.
