According to petwithsupplies, the United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Each of these countries has its own capital city, but the largest cities in the UK are all located in England. London is the largest city in the UK by far. It is the country’s capital and one of the world’s most visited cities. London has a long history stretching back 2,000 years and it is home to some of Britain’s most iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge. The city also hosts numerous festivals throughout the year including Notting Hill Carnival and Winter Wonderland. Birmingham is England’s second largest city with a population of 1.2 million people. Birmingham has a vibrant cultural scene with many museums, galleries and art galleries as well as plenty of green spaces such as Sutton Park and Cannon Hill Park. It is also home to several universities making it an attractive destination for students from around the world. Leeds is England’s third largest city with a population of over 750,000 people. It has been an important industrial center since the 19th century when it was known as “The Workshop of The World” due to its many factories producing textiles and clothing products. Today Leeds is known for its thriving music scene with many venues hosting live music events throughout the year. Manchester rounds out England’s top four cities with a population of over 550,000 people. Manchester has been an important cultural hub since the Industrial Revolution due to its numerous theaters and art galleries as well as its active nightlife scene centered around Canal Street which became famous after being featured in TV series Queer As Folk. Overall, London remains England’s largest city by far but other large cities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester offer their own unique attractions that make them popular destinations for both tourists and locals alike! In 2008, the United Kingdom was in a period of transition. The Labour government had been in power since 1997 and was still focused on the Blairite agenda of social justice and economic modernisation. This agenda had seen the UK become a major player in European politics, with the country taking an active role in the European Union and its decision-making processes. At the same time, tensions between Scotland and England had been growing due to issues such as devolution and a possible referendum on Scottish independence. The UK also faced increasing pressure from external powers such as the United States of America over issues such as Iraq and Afghanistan. In terms of foreign policy, the UK was keen to remain close to its traditional allies but also sought to build closer ties with emerging powers such as China and India. In 2008, the UK was still a key player in international affairs but also faced many challenges both internally and externally that needed to be addressed if it were to maintain its global influence.
