Additionally, it serves as the headquarters for many multinational companies and organizations. The second largest city in Sri Lanka is Kandy, located in the central part of the country. It has an estimated population of over 600 thousand people and serves as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Kandy is known for its historical sites such as the Temple of Tooth Relic, which houses one of Buddha’s teeth, as well as its beautiful botanical gardens. The third largest city in Sri Lanka is Jaffna, located on the northern tip of the island nation. It has an estimated population of over 500 thousand people and serves as an important regional center for trade and commerce in Sri Lanka. Jaffna also has several universities including University of Jaffna and Jaffna University College which offer higher education opportunities to students from all around Sri Lanka. Finally, Galle is a coastal city located on southern coast of Sri Lanka with an estimated population of over 100 thousand people. It was once considered to be a major port trading hub during British colonial rule but today it serves mainly as a tourist destination due to its unique architecture and beaches. In 2008, the geopolitics of Sri Lanka was characterized by the ongoing civil war between the government forces and the separatist group, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The civil war had been going on for over 25 years and had resulted in immense destruction and loss of life for both sides. In 2008, the government forces were able to gain control of most of the LTTE controlled areas in northern and eastern part of Sri Lanka. At the same time, Sri Lanka was also facing increasing international pressure to end its civil war. Several countries including India, United States, United Kingdom, Norway, Russia and Japan were actively involved in negotiations between government forces and LTTE to bring about a ceasefire. Additionally, international organizations such as UNICEF were providing humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict. Sri Lanka’s foreign policy was also heavily influenced by its close ties with India. The two countries had a long history of cooperation in areas such as defense and trade. In 2008, India provided military assistance to Sri Lanka which helped it gain control over most LTTE controlled areas. Additionally, Indian companies made significant investments in infrastructure projects throughout Sri Lanka during this period. Overall, 2008 was a difficult year for Sri Lanka as it continued to face challenges from both internal conflicts as well as external pressures from other countries and international organizations. However, with increased diplomatic efforts from various stakeholders, there was hope that a resolution could eventually be reached that would bring peace and stability back to Sri Lanka.
