According to collegetoppicks, Buena Vista County, Iowa was founded in 1851 and is located in the northwest corner of the state. It is bordered by Clay, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, and Sac counties to the north; Cherokee County to the east; and Cherokee, Ida, and Woodbury counties to the south. The county seat is Storm Lake. The county was named after Buena Vista Township which was established in 1854. The first settlers of Buena Vista County arrived in 1856 with many more coming in the following years. They were mainly immigrants from Germany and Scandinavia who settled on farms throughout the area. In 1858 a post office was established at Storm Lake which became the county seat when Buena Vista County was officially organized in 1859. During this time several businesses began to develop including sawmills, flour mills, wagon factories, blacksmiths shops and general stores. Several towns also developed including Newell and Albert City as well as other small unincorporated settlements scattered throughout the county. Agriculture has long been an important part of Buena Vista’s economy with corn being a major crop grown throughout most of the county’s history along with oats, wheat, hay and soybeans. Livestock farming has also been a major contributor to Buena Vista’s economy with cattle being one of its main sources of income over time as well as hog farming becoming a popular industry during World War II when pork prices rose dramatically due to increased demand for food products by soldiers overseas. In addition to these industries, tourism has also become an important source of revenue for Buena Vista County due to its many recreational activities such as fishing on Storm Lake or hunting on its many wildlife preserves scattered throughout the area. Buena Vista County is served by the Storm Lake Community School District, which consists of three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The elementary schools are Storm Lake South Elementary, Storm Lake North Elementary and Newell-Fonda Elementary. The middle school is Storm Lake Middle School and the high school is Storm Lake High School. All of the schools are accredited by the Iowa Department of Education and are committed to providing quality education to their students. The district also offers a variety of extra-curricular activities including athletics, music programs, theater productions and clubs such as student council and FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America). These activities help to provide students with opportunities to develop leadership skills while also having fun. The district also has a strong commitment to its community with many different events throughout the year such as homecoming parades, Veteran’s Day celebrations and holiday concerts. The district also offers a wide range of educational resources for students including online courses through the Iowa Learning Online program, Advanced Placement classes and concurrent enrollment courses through Buena Vista University. In addition, there are several after-school programs available for students who need additional help or support in their studies such as tutoring services or mentorship programs. The district strives to create an environment where all students feel welcome regardless of their background or beliefs with a focus on creating an inclusive community that celebrates diversity in all forms. It is committed to providing equitable access to education for all its students and has implemented initiatives such as expanding bilingual language services for English language learners as well as offering after-school programs designed specifically for at-risk youth populations in order to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity for success.
