Nonetheless, Canada maintained strong economic ties with its southern neighbor and was able to benefit from increased trade flows. Canada also maintained strong ties with other nations in North America through organizations such as NAFTA and NORAD, which allowed it to pursue an independent foreign policy while still maintaining close ties to its neighbors. Additionally, Canada had developed strong relations with many countries in Asia, Europe and Africa through various trade agreements and diplomatic initiatives.
