Glenn, a prominent agricultural leader who lived in the area during the mid-19th century. The county seat is Willows. The earliest inhabitants of Glenn County were Native American tribes such as the Wintu, Nomlaki and Patwin people who lived in the region for thousands of years prior to European contact. These tribes were eventually displaced when Spanish settlers arrived in the area during the late 1700s and early 1800s. In 1845, parts of what would become Glenn County were included in Colusa County which was one of the original 27 counties established during California’s statehood. In 1861, a portion of Colusa County became part of Tehama County before finally becoming its own separate county in 1891 when it was named after Dr. Hugh J. Glenn. The county is also home to several wineries and vineyards producing award-winning wines that are sold throughout California and beyond. Today, Glenn County is still primarily an agricultural community but has also seen some growth in other industries such as manufacturing and tourism over the last few decades thanks to its proximity to major cities like Sacramento and San Francisco as well as its scenic beauty which draws visitors from all over the world each year. The Glenn County Office of Education (GCOE) is the governing body that oversees the public school districts in Glenn County, California. The GCOE is responsible for providing educational services to the students in the county’s 11 public school districts. These districts include Orland Unified School District, Willows Unified School District, Hamilton Union High School District, Elk Creek Unified School District, Princeton Joint Unified School District, and several others. The GCOE also provides support services to all of its school districts. This includes special education services such as speech therapy and early intervention programs for young children with learning disabilities; professional development programs for teachers; and a variety of other resources to help ensure that all students receive a quality education.
