Canberra is located within Australian Capital Territory (ACT) with a population just over 400 thousand people which makes it sixth largest city in Australia but also serves as nation’s capital since 1901 when it was chosen by Queen Victoria to become capital due to its strategic location between Sydney & Melbourne that was deemed suitable for federal government operations at that time. Australia is a federal parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy. It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and is governed by the Westminster system. The country became independent from Britain in 1901, with the adoption of the Australian Constitution. In 2008, Australia had two major political parties: the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the Liberal/National Coalition. The ALP held government from 2007-2013 under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who was elected in 2007 after defeating John Howard’s coalition government which had been in power since 1996. The ALP’s platform focused on social justice and environmental issues such as climate change, while the Coalition focused on economic issues such as taxation and industrial relations reform. Australia has a long history of engagement in international affairs, particularly through its close relationship with its ‘Five Eyes’ intelligence partners – United States, Canada, New Zealand and United Kingdom. In 2008 it was involved in numerous foreign policy initiatives including Afghanistan reconstruction efforts; peacekeeping operations in East Timor; counter-terrorism operations against Islamic State militants; diplomatic ties with China; free trade negotiations with countries such as Japan; and troop deployments to Iraq. In 2008, Australia also participated actively within various regional organisations such as APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation), ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and ARF (ASEAN Regional Forum). In addition to this, Australia also engaged with various international organisations such as NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), G20 (Group of Twenty) and OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). Australia has also become increasingly involved in global development co-operation through its aid program which focuses on providing assistance to developing countries in areas such as health care services, education programs and infrastructure projects. In 2008 Australia provided over $3 billion to support poverty reduction initiatives around the world. In conclusion, Australia’s geopolitical position in 2008 was marked by its active engagement within both regional organisations as well as global forums – often promoting an agenda that highlighted human rights protection, peacekeeping efforts, free trade agreements, counter-terrorism initiatives and development co-operation – all while maintaining strong diplomatic ties with some of its closest allies including Britain, US & Canada.
