Susquehanna University was founded in 1858 by Benjamin Kurtz and other members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. It was originally known as Missionary Institute, and its purpose was to train young men for the ministry. The school’s first classes were held in a log cabin near Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. Over the years, the school has grown and changed, becoming a college in 1914 and a university in 1995. In addition to its main campus in Selinsgrove, Susquehanna now has several satellite campuses located throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
