SUNY Upstate Medical University was founded in 1834 as the Genesee College of Medicine. It was the first medical school to be established in New York State and one of the first medical schools in the United States. The original campus was located in what is now downtown Syracuse. In 1950, Genesee College of Medicine merged with Syracuse University and became part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. This marked a significant expansion for the medical school and enabled access to many more resources.

In 1963, Upstate Medical Center was established as an independent entity within SUNY; it included both a college of medicine and a hospital complex.
