SUNY Empire State College was founded in 1971 as the first college within the State University of New York system to offer a nontraditional approach to higher education. This innovative approach focused on providing students with individualized learning opportunities, allowing them to pursue degrees part-time and in self-directed study.
Since its founding, SUNY Empire State College has grown exponentially, now serving over 12,000 students across 35 locations throughout New York State.
