SUNY College at Potsdam was founded in 1816 as the St. Lawrence Academy, making it one of the oldest institutions of higher education in New York State. It was founded by Reverend Eliphalet Nott Potter, a Congregational minister from Potsdam, who wanted to provide educational opportunities for the local community and for those living in the surrounding area. The school originally had no formal curriculum and offered courses in theology and a few other subjects. Over the years, however, it began to add more and more courses to its curriculum until it eventually became a full-fledged college.

In 1867, St. Lawrence Academy was officially chartered as St. Lawrence University and began offering college degrees to its students. The university flourished over the next few decades until it had to close down due to financial difficulties during the Great Depression of 1930s. In 1944, with support from state legislature, SUNY College at Potsdam was established on the site of St. Lawrence University with a mission to serve all students regardless of their background or financial means.
