SUNY College at Oneonta was founded in 1889 as the Oneonta Normal School. The school was established to provide teacher preparation and education to the rural area of central New York. It began with just two teachers and forty-one students. Over the years, the school expanded its curriculum and became a four-year college in 1928. In 1948, it was chartered by the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees and changed its name to Oneonta State Teachers College.
In 1961, it became a liberal arts college and adopted its current name – SUNY College at Oneonta. The college has since grown to offer over 50 majors across four divisions: Business Administration; Liberal Arts & Sciences; Education; and Fine & Performing Arts. It also offers several graduate programs through its Graduate School including master’s degrees in Business Administration, Education, Human Ecology, Liberal Studies, Social Work and Speech Language Pathology/Audiology.
