SUNY College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School. It was the first college in New York State to train teachers. The school was originally located on a single acre of land and had just one building. Over the next several decades, the college continued to grow and expand its curriculum, adding new academic departments and offering a wider variety of courses. In 1931, it became a four-year institution and changed its name to the Cortland State Teachers College. In 1948, it was renamed State University of New York College at Cortland (SUNY Cortland) and began to offer bachelor’s degrees.

In 1971, SUNY Cortland became part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and adopted its current name. Since then, SUNY Cortland has continued to grow and now offers more than 50 undergraduate majors in areas such as Business Administration, Human Development/Family Studies, Education, Exercise Science/Sports Management and Psychology. The college also has graduate programs in Education and Human Development/Family Studies.
