The State University of New York at Plattsburgh (SUNY Plattsburgh) was founded in 1889 as the Plattsburgh Normal School. The school was established to provide teachers with a quality education and to meet the needs of the growing number of students in Clinton County. The school initially had only two faculty members and thirteen students, but it quickly grew in size and scope. In 1908, the school was renamed the State Normal School at Plattsburgh, and by 1912 it had become a four-year institution offering teacher certification programs. In 1915, the name was changed to State Teachers College at Plattsburgh to reflect its mission of training teachers for New York’s public schools.
In 1948, the college became part of the newly formed State University of New York (SUNY) system and was renamed SUNY Plattsburgh. This marked an important shift for the college as it began offering more than just teacher-training programs; degree programs in other areas such as business, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences were added shortly thereafter. Over time, SUNY Plattsburgh has evolved into a comprehensive university that offers more than 60 degree programs across five schools: Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies. The university also offers numerous graduate degrees including master’s degrees in business administration (MBA), education (MEd), nursing (MSN), public administration (MPA), social work (MSW), among others.
