The State University of New York College at Oswego, commonly referred to as SUNY Oswego, was founded in 1861. The college began as the Oswego Primary Teachers Training School, which was established by the state of New York. In 1928, the school changed its name to Oswego State Teachers College and became a four-year institution with a variety of degree programs. In 1948, the college was re-named the State University of New York at Oswego and began offering graduate degrees in education. Through the 1950s and 1960s, SUNY Oswego continued to expand its academic offerings and developed several satellite campuses in nearby towns. In 1972, SUNY Oswego officially became a comprehensive college with a full range of liberal arts and sciences programs.
