State University of New York at Fredonia (SUNY Fredonia) was founded in 1826 as the Fredonia Academy. The school was originally established to provide educational opportunities for local children, but it soon grew to include more advanced courses and programs. In 1867, the school was officially chartered as a college by the state of New York, becoming the first college in Chautauqua County. The college began offering its first bachelor’s degree programs in 1883.
In 1948, the College of Fredonia became part of the State University of New York system and changed its name to State University College at Fredonia (SUCF). In 1960, SUCF merged with nearby Brocton-Portland College to become State University College at Fredonia-Brocton-Portland. In 1969, it again changed its name to become State University of New York at Fredonia (SUNY Fredonia). This move marked a significant expansion for the university; new departments were added and enrollment increased dramatically over the next decade.
Today, SUNY Fredonia is home to more than 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students from around the world. It offers over 100 degree programs through its five academic schools: Arts and Sciences; Education; Professional Studies; Music; and Visual Arts and New Media. A variety of extracurricular activities are available on campus as well including student clubs and organizations, intramural sports teams, student government organizations and volunteer opportunities.
