Sullivan University was founded in 1962 by A.O. Sullivan, a highly successful entrepreneur and businessman. The University’s mission was to provide quality education and training to the citizens of Kentucky and beyond. Initially, Sullivan University offered programs in business, health care, information technology, and other professional areas of study. Over time, Sullivan University has grown to include more than 90 degree and diploma programs at its four campuses in Louisville, Lexington, Fort Knox and the National Center for Hospitality Studies in Louisville.

In the 1990s Sullivan University underwent a period of rapid growth as it added numerous degree programs including those in nursing and allied health sciences, criminal justice, culinary arts and baking and pastry arts. In 1998 the university established its College of Pharmacy which has become one of the leading pharmacy schools in Kentucky. As technology became increasingly important to higher education delivery systems, Sullivan University created an online learning platform that now offers over 20 degree programs online or via hybrid delivery formats.
