Stony Brook University was founded in 1957 as the State University College on Long Island. It was established by the State University of New York Board of Trustees with a mission to provide higher education opportunities to Long Island residents. The original campus was located on 60 acres of land in Oyster Bay, New York. The original building, later known as Harriman Hall, opened its doors to students in 1958 and by 1960, the first class had graduated from Stony Brook University.
Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Stony Brook saw tremendous growth both academically and physically. In 1962, the School of Medicine opened its doors to students and faculty. This marked a turning point for the university as it began to develop into a major research institution. During this time period, Stony Brook also acquired more land for expansion and developed programs in engineering, social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences.
