Stetson University was founded in 1883 by Henry A. DeLand, a New York-based entrepreneur and philanthropist. The university was originally named DeLand Academy, and it was located in DeLand, Florida. In 1889, the school’s name was changed to John B. Stetson University in honor of its benefactor, John B. Stetson – the founder of the iconic hat company, Stetson Hat Company. In 1901, the university moved to its current location in Deland and grew rapidly over the next few decades. By the 1950s, Stetson had become one of the largest universities in Florida with more than 2,000 students enrolled. Today, Stetson is an independent university with a student population of nearly 4,000 students from all 50 states and more than 40 countries around the world. It offers more than 80 undergraduate programs and more than 20 graduate programs across five colleges: Arts & Sciences; Business; Music; Law; and Education & Human Performance. Additionally, it is home to numerous research centers that focus on topics such as environmental studies and civic engagement.
