Stephens College was established in 1833 by the Rev. James Hardy and his wife, Mary Bates Hardy. The Hardys were Quakers from North Carolina who had migrated to Columbia, Missouri in 1820. The college began as a one-room schoolhouse with four young women as students. It quickly grew in size and importance, becoming the first women’s college west of the Mississippi River to receive a collegiate charter in 1855. The college’s mission was to provide young women with an education equal to that of men, and it did so by offering courses in literature, music, languages, science and math. Over time the curriculum expanded to include business courses such as accounting, economics and banking as well as home economics classes on cooking and sewing. In addition to academics Stephens College offered physical education classes such as sports and gymnastics as well as art classes such as drawing and painting. By the end of the 19th century Stephens College had become an important institution for female education in the Midwest region of the United States.
In 1902 Stephens College became affiliated with the Presbyterian Church which provided financial assistance for its operations during difficult times. During World War I many students at Stephens College volunteered their services for various war efforts including working at local hospitals or joining military reserves. After World War II enrollment at Stephens College increased significantly due to growing demand for higher education among women throughout America. This growth led to expansion of campus buildings including a new library which opened in 1962 followed by a student center that opened in 1966. In 1977 Stephens College received accreditation from North Central Association which allowed it to offer bachelor’s degrees for the first time since its founding 144 years earlier. Today Stephens College offers associate degree programs along with undergraduate degrees in fields such as business administration, communication arts, humanities & sciences and theater & dance performance & production.
