St. Xavier University was founded in 1846 by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic religious order. It was one of the first institutions of higher learning for women in the Midwest and was originally known as St. Francis Xavier Female Academy. The school was renamed St. Xavier College in 1912 and achieved university status in 1980. Throughout its history, St. Xavier University has been dedicated to providing a rigorous education and has been a leader in innovative teaching methods.

In the early 1900s, St. Xavier University began offering courses in nursing, business, and education, making it one of the first universities to provide these types of programs for women.
