St. Mary’s College of Maryland was founded in 1840 as St. Mary’s Female Seminary. It was established by the first bishop of the Diocese of Baltimore, James Whitfield, who wanted to create an educational institution for young women in Southern Maryland. The seminary operated until 1868, when it was closed due to financial difficulties. In 1895, the state of Maryland purchased the campus and opened St. Mary’s Normal and Industrial School for Girls. The school’s mission was to prepare young women for teaching careers and other professions through academic courses and practical instruction in industrial arts such as sewing, cooking, and carpentry. Over the next few decades, the school expanded its curriculum to include more liberal arts courses and eventually changed its name to St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 1960. In 1975, it became a public honors college offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees in various fields such as art history, biology, English literature, mathematics and political science.
