St. Joseph’s University was founded in 1851 by the Society of Jesus and has since become one of the leading Catholic universities in the United States. The school was originally located on St. Joseph’s Hill in North Philadelphia and was known as St. Joseph’s College. The college opened with just two faculty members and 12 students, but it soon began to expand its course offerings and student body size, eventually becoming a university in 1978.
