St. Joseph’s College New York was founded in 1916 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, a Roman Catholic religious order. It began as a two-year women’s college offering an Associate of Arts degree. In 1937, it received its charter to become a four-year college and began offering Bachelor’s degrees. The school became co-ed in 1970 and started offering graduate programs in 1980.

In the 1990s, St. Joseph’s College New York underwent major expansions and renovations, adding several new buildings to its campus including the Library Learning Center, which opened in 1996; the Carol A. Farrell Hall in 1997; and a new residence hall in 1999. In addition to these physical changes, the college also saw significant growth academically with the introduction of new majors including business management, nursing, social work and criminal justice. In 2015, St. Joseph’s College New York celebrated its centennial anniversary with various events throughout the year for students, faculty and alumni alike to commemorate this milestone event.
