St. Catherine University was founded in 1905 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The school started as a small college for women in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was dedicated to providing an excellent education to its students. The school’s mission was to enable women to lead lives of leadership, service and faith. Over the years, St. Catherine University has grown from a small college for women into one of the largest private universities in Minnesota with campuses in both Minneapolis and St. Paul.
The university has seen many changes over its more than a century-long history. In 1969, the university became co-educational and began admitting male students, allowing it to expand its student body and offer more opportunities to a wider range of learners. In 1975, the school changed its name from College of St Catherine to St Catherine University as part of an expansion that included degree programs at the graduate level as well as new academic programs such as nursing and business administration. The university also added additional campuses over time including locations in Arizona, Mexico City, and South Korea which allow students access to global educational experiences around the world. Today St Catherine University is home to over 5000 undergraduate students who have access to more than 40 majors across six colleges within the university system.
