St. Augustine’s College was founded in 1867 by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. It was established as a school for African Americans and became the first historically black college in the state. The college was initially located in Raleigh, but moved to its current location in 1877. The school was named after St. Augustine, a fourth century theologian and philosopher who is known as the “Father of English Christianity”.
The college has a long and distinguished history of providing educational opportunities to African Americans, which it continues to do today. In 1893, St. Augustine’s became one of the first black colleges to offer a four-year degree program and in 1920, it was one of the earliest schools to offer graduate programs for African Americans. Throughout its history, St. Augustine’s has produced prominent alumni, including civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who graduated from the college in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology; writer Zora Neale Hurston; educator Mary McLeod Bethune; and many more influential figures from politics, law, business, education and other fields.
