St. Augustine’s College was founded in 1867 by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. It was established as a school for African Americans and became the first historically black college in the state. The school was named after St. Augustine, a fourth century theologian and philosopher who is known as the “Father of English Christianity”.

Throughout its history, St. Augustine’s has produced prominent alumni, including civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who graduated from the college in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology; writer Zora Neale Hurston; educator Mary McLeod Bethune; and many more influential figures from politics, law, business, education and other fields. Check homethodology for information about American College of Chest Physicians .
