Spring Arbor University was founded in 1873 by the Free Will Baptist Church. Originally known as Spring Arbor Seminary, the school began with just four students and one teacher. As the years passed, more students enrolled and more faculty were hired to meet the growing demand. In 1909, Spring Arbor Seminary became Spring Arbor College with a new emphasis on four-year collegiate education. In 1939, the college was renamed Spring Arbor Junior College and began offering two-year associate degrees. In 1972, it achieved its current status as a four-year liberal arts university with a variety of degree programs in business, education, communications, science and nursing. Today, Spring Arbor University offers over 80 undergraduate majors and several graduate programs to nearly 5,000 students from across the country and around the world. The university also has an extensive online program for those who are unable to attend classes on campus.
