Spelman College was founded in 1881 by two white philanthropists, Harriet Giles and Sophia B. Packard. It is the oldest private historically black college for women in the United States. The college was originally named the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary and it was located on Auburn Avenue in downtown Atlanta. In 1924, the school changed its name to Spelman College after Laura Spelman Rockefeller, John D. Rockefeller’s wife who had donated money to help the school stay open during difficult financial times. Over the years, Spelman College has seen many changes and milestones, but its commitment to educating young women of African descent has remained strong.
In 1929, Spelman College became a member of Atlanta University Center (AUC), a consortium of six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). This allowed students to take courses at other AUC schools such as Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University while still earning their degree from Spelman College. During this time, prominent African American figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B Du Bois, and Thurgood Marshall all visited or lectured at Spelman College during their lifetime. In 1967, Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s daughter Bernice graduated from Spelman with honors becoming one of the first students to receive a bachelor’s degree from the college after it joined AUC in 1929. In 1988, former president Jimmy Carter gave an address at Spelman’s centennial celebration that was attended by over 10 thousand people including Coretta Scott King and many notable civil rights activists from across America. This same year also marked a major milestone for the college when it became fully coeducational with Morehouse becoming its brother institution offering courses for male students as well as female students enrolled at Spelman College itself. Today, this collaboration between Morehouse and Spelman continues through various joint programs offered by both institutions that allow students to take courses with faculty members representing both schools while still pursuing their own degrees at either Morehouse or Spelman respectively.
