Spalding University was founded in 1814 as the first Catholic institution of higher learning west of the Allegheny Mountains. The school was originally known as the “Athenaeum,” and its primary objective was to provide a quality education to young men. This Athenaeum eventually became Spalding College in 1829, named after Bishop John Lancaster Spalding, who had been instrumental in procuring its charter.
The college struggled financially throughout much of its early history, but that changed when it received a significant endowment from William Marshall Anderson in 1888. Anderson’s generous donation enabled the college to expand and construct new buildings for its growing student body. In 1973, Spalding College became Spalding University, reflecting the expansion of its academic offerings beyond undergraduate studies. Today, Spalding is a private university with a student population of more than 2,000 students enrolled in over 35 different degree programs across four schools: Arts & Sciences, Business & Communication, Education & Counseling Psychology and Professional Studies. The university also offers several online degree programs for students who are not able to attend classes on campus due to work or family commitments.
