Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) was founded in 1927, in Fort Worth, Texas. It was originally known as the Southwestern Bible School and was established to provide a Christian educational opportunity for Pentecostal ministers and lay people. In 1940, the school moved to Waxahachie, Texas and changed its name to Southwestern Bible College. During this time period, the college’s curriculum focused mainly on theology and ministry-related topics. By 1956, the college had grown enough to become a university and change its name once again to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU).
In 1961, SAGU became accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In response to growing demand for a broader range of degree programs, SAGU began offering degrees in education, business administration, communications and other fields in addition to its traditional theology curriculum. In 1969, SAGU opened a branch campus in Houston which offered degrees in business administration and education. SAGU has since expanded its academic offerings with additional campuses located in Arizona and Arkansas as well as an online learning program for students who are unable to attend classes on campus. Today, SAGU offers over 50 degree programs at its four locations as well as online courses. The university is also home to several research centers such as the Center for Excellence in Ministry which focuses on developing effective ministry leaders; the Center for Leadership Development which provides resources on leadership development; and the Institute of Global Studies which provides opportunities for international research projects. SAGU has become one of the leading universities dedicated solely to Christian higher education while still providing quality education across all disciplines.
