Southern Wesleyan University (SWU) was founded in 1906 by the Central South Carolina Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The first classes were held in a one room schoolhouse located in Central, South Carolina with only twenty-four students. As enrollment increased, the school moved to its current location in nearby Central. In its early years, SWU offered a classical education including Latin and Greek studies as well as courses in science, math and religion. In 1925, the school became an accredited college and began offering four-year degrees.
In the 1930s, the college began offering graduate degrees such as Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees. Over the decades, SWU continued to expand its academic programs and offerings. During World War II, SWU played an important role in training military personnel and hosted a Navy V-12 program on campus from 1944-1945. In 1947, SWU became a university and changed its name from Central Wesleyan College to Southern Wesleyan University (SWU). See topschoolsintheusa for GRE test centers in Maryland.
In recent years, Southern Wesleyan University has continued to expand its academic offerings including new degree programs such as nursing and business administration. The university also opened two regional campuses located in North Augusta and Charleston where students can take classes closer to home or complete their entire degree program online. Additionally, since 2017 SWU has been offering select undergraduate classes at Clemson University’s main campus for students who want access to both universities’ resources.
