Southern Vermont College (SVC) was founded in 1926 as the Southern Vermont Junior College. It was originally a two-year, private, liberal arts college located in Bennington, Vermont. The college was established to provide an education to the local population and to serve as a feeder school for larger institutions like Dartmouth and Harvard. In 1962, the college became a four-year institution and changed its name to Southern Vermont College.
In recent years, SVC has continued to expand its academic offerings and student body. In 2012, it added its first graduate degree program in Healthcare Administration. The following year marked the opening of a new student center that includes a fitness center, cafeteria, library, and bookstore. Additionally, the college has added several online programs and certificates for students who are unable to attend classes on campus due to geographical or other restrictions.
In 2017 SVC celebrated its 90th anniversary with special events throughout the year. The college also joined forces with New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) that same year which allowed them to further expand their reach beyond the local area by offering online courses nationwide and abroad. With this new accreditation came increased awareness of SVC’s commitment to excellence in higher education which has since resulted in increased enrollment numbers across all programs at the college.
