Southern Utah University (SUU) was founded in 1897 as the Branch Normal School of the University of Utah. The school’s mission was to provide an education to those living in rural areas of Utah, and to help create a skilled labor force for the growing industries in the area. It was initially located in Cedar City, but moved to its current location in Cedar City, Utah in 1913.
In 1935, SUU became a four-year college and was renamed Utah Southern State College. It continued to grow over the years and changed its name once again in 1991, becoming Southern Utah University. Through its history, SUU has stayed true to its original mission of providing quality education opportunities for rural students and helping build a skilled labor force for local industries.
Today, SUU continues to strive towards excellence by offering more than 150 undergraduate degrees as well as numerous graduate programs. The university is also home to many student organizations and clubs that promote leadership and social engagement on campus. Southern Utah University is a public university located in Cedar City, Utah. It was founded in 1897 and is the oldest institution of higher education in the state of Utah. The university offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including a variety of online courses. With an enrollment of over 10,000 students, SUU is the largest university in southern Utah. In 2021, SUU saw an 8% increase in admissions applications compared to 2020, with over 12,000 applications received.
