Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) was founded in 1956 as part of the Southern University System. The school was established to provide educational opportunities to African Americans who had been denied access to higher education due to segregation. SUNO is the only historically black college or university (HBCU) in Louisiana offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

In 1957, the campus opened with a freshman class of 78 students. Over time, SUNO expanded its academic offerings and student body size, becoming an accredited four-year institution in 1965. By the 1970s, SUNO had become a major force in higher education, particularly in the areas of social work and nursing. It also began offering doctoral degrees for the first time, making it one of only two HBCUs in Louisiana with this distinction. In addition to its academic growth, SUNO played an important role in civil rights activism during this period. Its students were at the forefront of protests against segregation and discrimination throughout New Orleans and beyond.

Today, SUNO has a student population of over 5,000 students enrolled across five different colleges: Arts & Sciences; Business & Public Administration; Education & Human Development; Graduate Studies; and Social Work. The university offers more than 30 undergraduate degree programs and 11 graduate degree programs as well as certificate programs for those seeking specialized training or professional development opportunities.
