Southern Oregon University (SOU) is a public university located in Ashland, Oregon. Founded in 1926 as Ashland Academy, it was the first college in the state to be owned and operated by a public school district. In 1939, the college received its official name of Southern Oregon College of Education. The college underwent several changes throughout its history including the addition of more degree programs and the addition of graduate programs. In 1997, SOU transitioned from a college to a university and adopted its current name.
Since then, SOU has grown to become one of the premier universities in Oregon. It offers over 100 degree programs across six schools: Arts & Sciences; Business; Education; Health & Human Performance; Humanities & Social Sciences; and Technology & Applied Science. In recent years, SOU has invested heavily in expanding its academic offerings with new graduate degrees such as an online Masters in Science Leadership and an online Masters in Business Administration (MBA).
