Southern Nazarene University was founded in 1899 by the Church of the Nazarene. The university was originally located in Bethany, Oklahoma, and was known as the Bethany-Peniel College. It was established to provide a liberal arts education to students from all walks of life. Over the years, Southern Nazarene University has grown and expanded its offerings to include over forty undergraduate and graduate programs. In 1972, SNU moved from its original location in Bethany to its current location in Bethany, Oklahoma. Southern Nazarene University is a private Christian university located in Bethany, Oklahoma. Founded in 1899, the university has grown to become one of the most respected universities in the region. According to U.S. News & World Report, SNU is ranked #145 among all national universities and #58 among regional universities (south). The total enrollment for the 2019-2020 academic year was 2,844 students with a student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1. Additionally, nearly 80% of classes have fewer than 20 students.

The majority of SNU’s student body comes from Oklahoma with more than 78% being from the state and 64% being from within 50 miles of campus. Nearly 55% of students are male and 45% are female which creates a strong gender balance on campus.
