Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) was founded in 1957 as an extension of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The goal was to create a public institution of higher learning to serve the Metro East region that included Madison and St. Clair Counties. Initially, classes were held in area high schools until the first SIUE campus buildings were constructed in 1965. The campus was designed by renowned architect Bernard Bartolini, who incorporated the natural beauty of the area into his design.

The university continued to expand over the next few decades, adding new buildings and programs such as the School of Nursing and School of Engineering. In 1995, a new library building opened and in 2002, the state-of-the-art Morris University Center opened its doors to students and faculty alike. SIUE also has an extensive study abroad program with opportunities in over 25 different countries around the world for students to gain international experience while earning credits towards their degree.
