Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) was founded in 1893 as the New Haven State Normal School. It was part of the Connecticut Board of Education’s plan to create a network of state-funded teacher training institutions. The school opened its doors with just one building, and began offering classes in September 1893. The first class had only 30 students and four faculty members, all of whom were women.

Over the next century, New Haven State Normal School underwent several name changes, becoming New Haven State Teachers College in 1921, Southern Connecticut State College in 1959, and finally Southern Connecticut State University in 1983. SCSU has grown significantly since its founding; today it is home to more than 11,000 students and over 500 faculty members across its five colleges: Arts & Sciences; Business; Education & Professional Studies; Health & Human Services; and Graduate Studies & Research. It offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its various schools and departments. Check LOCALCOLLEGEEXPLORER for a list of community colleges in Minnesota.
