Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) was founded in 1859 by the Southern Baptist Convention in Greenville, South Carolina. It is the oldest of six seminaries affiliated with the Convention. The seminary was established to train ministers for churches in the Southern United States and to defend and protect the doctrine of Baptist faith. Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is a private, Christian-based institution located in Louisville, Kentucky. It was founded in 1859 by the Southern Baptist Convention and offers degrees at the graduate and doctorate levels. The seminary is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The seminary has a total enrollment of approximately 3,000 students with approximately 1,200 full-time students. The student body is made up of individuals from all over the world representing more than 50 different denominations. The majority of students come from Baptist churches throughout the United States, but there are also many international students as well as members of other Christian denominations and faiths. In terms of diversity, African American students make up 13% of the student body and international students represent 16%.
