Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) was founded in 1859 by the Southern Baptist Convention in Greenville, South Carolina. It is the oldest of six seminaries affiliated with the Convention. The seminary was established to train ministers for churches in the Southern United States and to defend and protect the doctrine of Baptist faith. Over time, its mission has expanded to include additional academic programs for both graduate and undergraduate students.

The seminary has grown significantly since its inception. In 1919, SBTS moved from Greenville to Louisville, Kentucky, where it is currently located.
