Southern Adventist University was founded in 1892 as Graysville Academy, a small school located in Graysville, Tennessee. It was established by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to provide educational opportunities for students living in the Southern United States. The school began with just seven students and three faculty members. In 1907, the school was renamed Southern Junior College and moved to its current location in Collegedale, Tennessee. Over the next several decades, the college grew to become a four-year university offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Today, Southern Adventist University is one of the largest Seventh-day Adventist universities in North America with more than 3,000 students from over 40 countries enrolled each year. The university offers over 100 majors and concentrations in a wide range of subjects including business administration, nursing, education and religion. Students have access to numerous resources including a library containing more than 400,000 volumes of books and journals as well as state-of-the-art facilities such as an observatory and planetarium.
