Southeastern University has a long and storied history. Established in 1885, Southeastern has been providing quality higher education to its students for over 130 years. The university was founded by prominent local businessman, William H. Carter, who wanted to create an institution that would offer education to all in the region regardless of race or gender. He purchased a large tract of land and built the first buildings on the campus.
The university grew quickly over the next few decades with new programs being added and enrollment increasing rapidly. In 1923, the university was granted accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which allowed it to award degrees for the first time. During this period, Southeastern began to expand its curricular offerings to include more disciplines such as business, engineering, and nursing.
