Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOSU) was founded in 1909 as Southeastern Normal School. Located in Durant, Oklahoma, the school was created to train teachers and provide educational opportunities to the Choctaw Nation. The school opened its doors with just 23 students and one building. In 1911, the school changed its name to Southeastern State Normal School. This new name reflected its expanded mission of providing higher education beyond teacher training. The school’s curriculum was expanded to include liberal arts classes such as English, mathematics, history, science and more. In 1921, the school began offering bachelor’s degrees for the first time and changed its name to Southeastern State Teachers College.
Throughout the next few decades, SOSU continued to expand its curriculum by adding new degree programs and increasing enrollment numbers. In 1974, the college changed its name once again to Southeastern Oklahoma State University in recognition of its commitment to providing a quality education at all levels of learning. Today, SOSU is a public university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs including business administration, education and nursing.
