Southeast Missouri State University was founded in 1873 and is the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state of Missouri. It began as a normal school, which was a teacher training school, and evolved over time into a university. The first classes were held in a rented building located in downtown Cape Girardeau, with an enrollment of just twelve students. The first president of Southeast Missouri State University was William H. Byerly, who served from 1873 to 1885. In 1875, the school moved to its current location on what is now known as the River Campus.
In 1889, the school became known as Southeast Missouri State Normal School and began offering two-year degrees and four-year degrees in education for teachers. Over the next few decades, more degrees were added to the curriculum including arts and sciences programs. In 1916, it became Southeast Missouri State Teachers College and then was renamed Southeast Missouri State College in 1945 when it began offering bachelor’s degrees in other fields besides education. In 1972, it finally achieved university status and changed its name to Southeast Missouri State University. Today, it offers over 200 undergraduate programs across five colleges: Liberal Arts; Education; Health & Human Services; Science & Mathematics; and Business & Social Sciences.
