The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has a long and storied history. It was founded in 1885 as the Dakota School of Mines, making it one of the oldest technological institutes in the United States. The school was established by the Dakota Territorial Legislature to provide instruction in science and technology to help develop the local mining industry. Initially, it offered only a two-year program in metallurgy and mining engineering. However, over time, its curriculum expanded to include civil engineering, electrical engineering, geology, chemistry and other related fields. In 1989, the school changed its name to South Dakota School of Mines and Technology to better reflect its academic mission.
During the 20th century, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology continued to expand both academically and physically.
